Road, runs, racing, ridicule
Thursday, May 6, 2010 - Race Reports
A lot has happened since the last post.

Monday featured a 14 hour drive from Silver City to Oklahoma City. No, it wasn't awesome.

Tuesday started off with a quality session on the toilet. I don't know what caused this "stomach virus," but it sure wasn't fun. Of the 24 hours in Tuesday, I probably slept off 20 of them.

On Wednesday I felt better, but not great. I was still having trouble putting stuff down. Rode for a bit and totally cracked. Not eating for 2 days really messed with my recovery and energy level.

Today was the time trial to start Joe Martin. I wasn't expecting much given the last few days. However, I still managed 16th, part of Bissell's 7 in the top 20. Someone needs to tell Hollywood to get his act together.

And what about that collegiate nationals article on Velonews? Every year I laugh as some intern picks their alma mater as the favorite.

This year was extra funny because people could comment. My favorite was posted by Ash:

Typically even in shoddy reporting the defending champion at least gets a mention...

For those that don't know, the defending champions are UC Davis and I hear Judd will be posting updates this year. Go UC Davis!!

A couple points, because, as a longtime lurker, I like your blog, but I also like fairness.

* The article is a U.S. wrap-up and is not intended to be the definitive collegiate nationals preview. If it was, then you might have a point, but it's not.
* No alma maters mentioned. In fact, rival of alma mater was picked.
* Not an intern.
* I'll agree that UC Davis might have been a miss, but can you say that Lees McRae and Fort Lewis don't deserve to be selected as favorites? No.
* If you weren't an alumnus/current student of UC Davis would you be so offended? Probably not. There aren't many things that inspire loyalty more than one's college/university. What's in the comments? Every person piping up for their alma mater. (Go South Dakota! Oh wait, they don't even have a cycling team.)

On another topic, good luck and go fast at JMSR.

A couple points.

1. Joke.
2. Don't take it personally. Comments mean people read the thing. The author should learn from it and move on.
3. The fact is the defending champions should at least get a mention. They did in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
4. Thanks for reading my blog.

Fairness? Nicole, I think fairness would be to at least mention last years victors. Either way, the article is crap, so I'm not sure why you have taken it upon yourself to protect it as 'fair'.

Paul that was me with the comment you liked. As to above, that's hilarious: "Can you say that Lees-McRae and FL don't deserve to be selected as favorites? No." LOL! Um yes, I can. Last I checked, neither of the teams you mentioned are the defending national champion! I don't think I've ever read anything though where even in a "preview" of ANY sport's national championship, in any big sports publication, where the defending champion was not even mentioned! "UC Davis may have been a miss..." Ya' think? And as to the comments being random like the South Dakota thing- if you read them, I think 3/4 when I viewed them were in reference to the UC Davis "miss," and not what Nicole mentioned. It is what it is, and it was really wrong. Don't make excuses because the reality is that its not a good preview to not even name the defending national champion. Do better next time Velonews, that's it. The end.

Did you "Day" a tapeworm? I hear they're running rampant in the southern regions this time of year.

@Paul - Man, text-based mediums suck for conveying intent. :) Also, I didn't take the comments on that article personally (it's not my article after all), I was just pointing out that they're not unbiased. But I'm not unbiased either.

@Jay - I'm, admittedly, not an unbiased reader. And further, I'm also the girl who gets in trouble on Facebook for posting links refuting political misinformation, if that tells you anything about my need for accuracy. (Yes, I'm super fun! I swear!)

@Ash - I said "might have" because while I know they're generally strong contenders from year to year, I honestly haven't followed UC Davis' results this season. I'm also not sure I buy that defending champs should automatically be mentioned as a contender the next year.

But, really, my last point was about perspective. When it comes to the VN articles on collegiate cycling, it seems a lot of comments are not only from alumni, but alumni who used to race for their uni. This population is by definition pretty defensive of/awesomely enthusiastic about their alma mater. (Hence the Vermont, CU, Marian, UC Davis, etc mentions in the comments.)

A couple points (well, one point and a question, actually):

1. Paul Mach is the defending champion of the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic.
2. Will Paul Mach be attending said bicycle race in 2010?

Yes, I'll be back at Mt. Hood this year.
