I'm Serious, Seriously
Monday, November 10, 2008 - General
Last week Bissell put out a press release about next years team and it got picked up by VeloNews, Cycling News, NorCal Cycling News and Podium in Sight.

While my name was just there to fill the list of additional riders, the official release described me as a "serious climber." I think this was included to let the Phil Mooneys of the world know that when I drop them on a climb, it's no laughing matter (well maybe to the spectators it is).

Since the news broke I've received a lot of questions about the whole situation. To make life easier I would like to answer the three most common ones here.
  1. Will you be quitting school to ride full time?

No, I don't make enough to throw away 3 years of normal progress toward my degree. Plus I ride full time already.

  2. Will you be doing the Tour of California?

Odds are that my first race as a pro will not be a 9 day UCI stage race, one of the biggest in the country. However, I sure would like it to be.

  3. Can I get a discount on a vacuum cleaner?

Bissell is one of the oldest manufactures of vacuum cleaners and I am glad you are interested in their products. However, at this time I am unable to give anyone a discount. But do visit the Bissell webpage to learn more about their fine products and to find a local retailer. I can personally attest that their products suck quite well.
I would also like to add that it's rude to ask how much money someone makes. Even if it's phrased as a series of yes or no questions such as, "Do you make more than $10,000? How about $5,000?"

I heard that you were planning on voiding your contract with Bissell and instead riding for Astana next year. For no salary of course... Can you respond to these rumors?

Also, I feel like you ought to restart talking about Philly Mann in these blogs again, as I recently heard that he and his teammates still frequent this blog.

I never understood the whole grad. student - PRO thing. I guess some advisors just don't care if they see you. Doesn't the fact that you have all this time to ride you bike imply you could just buck-up and finis your degree in 4 years instead of the "normal" 6? Maybe there are additional life-lessons that the JM's will teach you....

yeah, you aren't educated enough...

but, on the topic of being question'd as to what pro-bike riders should be paid $$... i have to ask - shouldn't there be a union for bike riders? aren't bike riders ... workers?

i mean, Bissell vacuum company (well done, Bissell, btw ... it's the only sucker i'll ever buy when in need) hired on these spandex'd individuals to be advertising agents of their products.

and they work - you pro riders. you risk life and limb, every day, to catch consumer eyes on the product your team advertises.

During the Tour of California, the eyes of the nation and WORLD will be here ... passing over doorsteps of Davis and checking out the coasts and forests of Santa Cruz.

And folks will flock to see you bike riders - in person or on tv, on the interwebs or in magazines, in the schools you visit or the many newspaper innerviews you'll give throughout the year, in all those big and small towns across the entirety of the US.

... that's work to sell Bissell products.

sounds like a lot of damn work, actually. and sounds like work that risks your skin more times than most.
